Max Berry is most easily found documenting landscape from the fantasy of daydream, where vastness is digested through transport and the conveyance of self. A shift in outlook.
Drawing upon on a shared common experience, he utilises international residencies and regional trips within Australia to gather material. The resulting works are a testimony to a landscape tradition which lies at the centre of both traditional painting practice and the Australian experience. The works which make up ‘Idyll Structures’ are the result of Berry’s studio and field-work activities in Greece and Finland.
‘What became instantly clear was the change in light. I’m fascinated by the softness and colour of the winter light. Shadows and forms would magically reveal themselves and invite further investigation in contrast to the familiar harshness of Australia and its brutal sunshine.’
Exploring new territory on daily walks and bicycle rides, various structures and locations became routine, many of which feature in the works on display. Berry completed sketches and took photographs on these journeys, building an overall understanding of the landscape. Collecting colours and building forms. A document of a single glimpse, a poetic and observational excursion that considers the relationship between our world and place within it.
Max Berry (b.1987) has shown his artwork in Sydney and internationally and has undertaken numerous residencies across Australia and Europe. In 2015, he was selected as a finalist in the AGNSW Wynne landscape prize. This is Max Berry’s first solo exhibition at Backwoods Gallery and will feature paintings and a publication inspired by recent residencies.
