ALL IN THE FRONT by Elliott Routledge

  • backwoods gallery 5/25 easey st collingwood Collingwood Australia (map)

In his latest body of work, All In The Front, Elliott ‘Numskull’ Routledge examines the façade, exploring the deceptive nature of how we choose to portray ourselves, both consciously and subconsciously. Through the highly distinctive and abstracted visual approach Elliott has developed over a lengthy career in both public muralism and intimate art making, All In The Front marks his first direct exploration into portraiture. Here, this series will include paintings on canvas, sculpture, and installation, enabling a deep investigation into the way we choose to project ourselves.

Elliott’s work takes visual data from experience, feeling, or physical objects and rearranges them into abstracted portraits. Filtered and harmonised into an array of traits, All In The Front sits between radical fragmentation and highly identifiable visual motifs, simultaneously emphasising the synthesis of form and the significant symbolism of colour.

Elliott’s practice spans canvas paintings, sculpture and large-scale public works. He was a feature of the Art & About Festival in Sydney and the SODO Track international mural festival in Seattle, USA. Furthermore, Elliot was the Resident artist of the Museums Quartier, Vienna, in 2014. His work can be viewed publicly in the form of numerous large-scale works or sculptures throughout Australia and internationally, and is collected by the City of Sydney, Museum of Vienna, University of Technology Sydney, Westfield, and The Galeries Sydney.

Elliott’s painting process

Elliott Routledge is a contemporary Australian artist based in Sydney, NSW. Known for his public art installations, paintings, and sculptures, he has exhibited in galleries and installed murals throughout the world.

His work exists in a balance between expressive mark making, abstract form and often word based art. Having spent a period of time practising and studying colour, his current work is reflective of how he takes this information of colour relationships and pattern choices, and treats them in a way to create bold, colourful and harmonious compositions.
