RESIO
IN2WISHIN

06.05.21 ~ 09.05.21

Derived from its title in2wishin (intuition/into wishing) the body of work explores the freedom of movement and possibility of the cathartic release of expression through the meditation of painting from intuition. Whilst exploring explosive movement and flow. This body of work is almost a study of dance and movement capturing raw emotions.” - RESIO

After what seemed like a meteoric rise in melbourne’s much-loved street art scene from the outside, Resio had actually been quietly plying his craft for years adopting the spray can as his preferred medium way back in primary school. Initially introduced to breakdancing and hip hop culture by his late uncle, a seed was sown that would shape Resio’s life for the next de-cade; the idea of adopting a nom de plume in the graffiti art world, and then running totally, and unapologetically, free with it. Over the last 4 years he has done exactly that, bedazzling us with his unique breadth of talent, gracing our city with a trail of work that has charmed both the old stewards of the scene as well as joining the ranks of this Generation’s freakishly talented ambassadors.

Over the last 2 years he has doubled back on this amazing trajectory for the more introspective life of the studio artist, trading in the aerosols for the brushes and his huge walls for relatively intimate canvas’s but still approaching his work with his unique brand of Energy to create this body of beautiful “abstract” works.

I say abstract in inverted commas, because they really are a celebration, an exploration and poetic documentation of a decade of art making that was, and still is informed by his formative years as a dancer. He sees the inseparable link of his art making practice linked with music and dance. Playing out in the gestural expressive aspects of this work that are Seemingly “snap” frozen under the slick resin surface.

The paintings are also a nuanced coded pictorial landscape that whilst looking liberatingly free are actually part a conscious homage to years of studying and participating in the global aerosol art movements ever evolving visual language.

The paintings are an authentic record of this and resonate with this inherited integrity because their maker has bravely ‘educated’ himself on the sometimes not so forgiving streets. Not an easy art practice by any stretch, but perhaps these risks deserve to be rewarded. The old adage rings true here; you can’t fake the funk! Part spontaneity, part control, part personal cathartic release and part micro/macrocosmic homage to a global visual language and a history that resio is now an undeniable part of.

It’s not easy to let go as an artist, to circumnavigate the predictable applause of replicating known imagery. These works are the evidence of that letting go, of basking in one’s intuition and taking that with this medium for a dance.
